"Purchase the plunges" is a slang expression alluding to the act of acquiring stocks taking after a decrease in costs. After a huge plunge in the cost of a security or stock file, speculators ought to build positions or buy diverse stocks to gain by what is viewed as an inevitable rise.

At the point when a high-octane development stock has topped, seldom does it return rapidly and lead the following business sector uptrend. Truth be told, many stocks don't approach their unequaled highs for quite a long time.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Some like to buy a small cap biotech AFTER good news is released and it opens up 100% higher than it closed at yesterday, hoping that it will continue upward. I prefer to buy such stocks when they start coming down, or even more when they sell off hard (30, 50, 70+ %) due to an overreaction to bad (but not likely catastrophic) news that makes them temporarily oversold. I wait patiently until there's eventually likely to be better news on that drug (or another drug they're working on) or on something else such as earnings, a big activist investor buying in, M & A rumors, or whatever... and often buy more if it gets even cheaper along the way.

I'd rather buy a little AMZ when it sells off hard to $450 and the talking heads are saying it's the end of the world - I'd rather be selling some when it's $750 and the talking heads are saying that it will hit the moon.

Apple was supposedly dead a little over a decade ago. I bought a little in early 2007 @ ~ $90 (pre-split, would be ~$13 at today's sticker price), kept a little over the years (bought more when it would sell off, sold some when it would blast up double digits), and have made a small fortune here.

Buffett and Icahn have both averaged over 20% over 50+ years by value investing - by buying good companies that have stumbled and by being patient.

I'd rather do what I did with Walmart and buy it roughly 12-16 months ago between ~ $55-65 and sell most of it between $70-75 - than I would have bought it 2 years ago at $90 when it was sky high, or waited more recently to buy it @ ~ $70-75.

I was buying oil drillers and shippers when they were getting kicked down in the dirt 6-12 months ago, and sold a good chunk of my holdings in them recently when they soared sky high after we elected a Republican, and after OPEC said they would stop flooding the global oil market. I bought most of my current stake in CLR when they were in the upper teens and lower 20's late last year and early this year, sold most of it recently when it hit $55...

As an example, this is one of a number of portfolios I have - just a small % of my nestegg in a pretty speculative portfolio. This one particular portfolio has long stock positions only - no options, no shorting in this particular portfolio up to now.

I started buying stocks in this particular portfolio in early April in a new discount brokerage account, and have accumulated about 100 stocks in it. I have been mainly buying double digit % dips and selling some or all of a position on double digit (or more) % jumps:

I have bought $27,976.46 worth of stock total in this particular portfolio since early April. I have realized $7,240.61 in realized cap gains since then. I have accumulated $2,518.38 in unrealized cap gains. My total returns in this portfolio in 8 months have been ~ 34.88%...

Today I bought some PRTO, a little INOV, and added to my positions in ENZN and AVXL.

Yesterday I bought some OPHT and PFMT on big dips, among others.

The old saying, buy on rumour, sell on fact works every time - at least in the short term. I am with you JR, no point buying when the stock is shooting up for a day or so after good news. Let it settle, let the profit takers come in and then start picking up for the longer term. Volatile stock movements are like elastic bands, they will always stretch too far and then snap back. That is the time to buy.
