I guess people can get away with spreading outright lies on forums. There's little in the way of regulation on things like that. Thankfully forums are also self regulating, so certain rumors like these will never get much in the way of momentum.

Right. Certainly if you are here to do more than just glance at titles, it is easy to decipher false statements, such as above. I did not see one comment that was made without the poster doing even some sort of quick search to verify information. I was happy to not read any "wow, really's?!" Or other such responses which would show that the responder blindly believed such a statement.

I think Paypal was spun off mainly because they knew there wold be a bidding war on it from Google, Alibaba and Amazon. I almost see the gov´t having to step in on ths one.. if either of those 3 could buy paypal, it would create some serious benefits.

I do think Google was pushing for paypal to be split from Ebay. Google has tried, unsuccessfuly to replace paypal to the point where they don´t even allow paypal for adwords.

Yeah, I think PayPal is still independent, but I've read that eBay will indeed work without PayPal, I am guessing they need a more reliable system due to refunds, so let's see what they will use.

I have not heard about this and there would usually be some sort news story about something as big as this would be before it happened. Doesn't Google already have their own payment system like a wallet or something like that?

The move obviously benefits a standalone PayPal more than it does eBay.

Yup, there's nothing really special that Ebay offers other than their user base. The fees are insane and support is almost non-existent!

I love Paypal. It has been a convenient method of payment. I did read up on this. Paypal is up for grabs but it does't seem like a decision has been made about the fate of Paypal. I hope they eventually make a decision one way or the other.

Well, obviously a decision's going to be made on PayPal. It hasn't been split from eBay just yet, though. Nothing's going to happen until that split actually occurs, and then interest in PayPal will vary. PayPal isn't without its issues, so some companies might back off on trying to acquire it. I doubt PayPal will standalone without being acquired at some point after the split, though.
