The thing is that these type of things have always been happening through history. Unemployement rates have always been equally screwed up. No matter who is in office, they find little ways to fudge the numbers.

Weren't there like a total of 17 states that increased their minimum wage that went into effect on January 1st? Sadly my state isn't one of them, we are stuck with the federally mandated $7.25 an hour. I imagine the first quarter unemployment rates will be up and they will explain that away with the "seasonal employee" tripe.

The minimum wage in our state has not been raised, but the City of Seattle just imposed a $15 an hour minimum wage, which we all predict is going to kill the small businesses around. Yes, if you work at Mc.Donalds, you get to make bank now. I am really interested to see how this all pans out for the employment rate for the city!

It certainly does make sense! I imagine it puts you in a "training and education" category and takes you off the "jobless" statistics. The Government manipulate the statistics so much that they never give a true picture of how things really are. Whilst I really do hope that things in the US are beginning to pick up, I'm sure that this recent statistic is not really all it seems to be.

Seattle will be an interesting test case and it will be interesting to see if fast-food places manipulate the data in order to prevent it from happening country-wide. I think prices for food and service will not change in Seattle, what I think will happen is they will just cut man-hours and demand more efficiency from current employees, who should be more than happy to work a little harder and faster seeing they just got their salary doubled. Jobs will also be more competitive, so you will get better workers.

That's definitely good news! I hope though that the unemployment rate will steadily fall down. I've somehow felt the improvement because here in my country, the visa processing for the US has somehow been lifted allowing mostly healthcare professionals to work and migrate there.

The devil is always in the detail. It's great that the stats are pointing in the right direction, but there will always be those saying that they can't actually feel the fruits of the recovery. Yes, they may be in gainful employment but are they in a full-time role? Or have they seen wage deflation? Or have they seen their role split into two? We can't be too cynical about it because a recovery is a recovery, but the working world now is a different one to before the financial crisis.

Unemployment rates are absurd in my opinion, just adequate to the capitalist system. We have created a system where people want to work and cannot, so does this make any sense?

This is very positive for the economy. I'm really happy the unemployment rate is lowering , the more it lowers the better.
