Chris Catrambone, a Louisiana Millionaire is helping the rescue mission for migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. He is a Louisiana native who made millions in the insurance business. He and his wife Regina founded a non-profit search and rescue operation named Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) to help save the migrants and refugees who fled Africa and Middle East in search of a better life in Europe. He said in a statement, “We had excess money. What would we have done with that money? We could've bought another house. We could've bought a private jet ... whatever it is that rich people do.” “But those things for us weren't meaningful. This was more meaningful.” In the first season of 2014, he financed the mission with $8 million out of his very own pocket. Maybe he should spend another $8 million paying for the living expenses of those who do make it to europe, since right now it's me & every other EU citizen who is paying for that.
I could not agree more with that post. It's all very well helping them leave their own country but who finances them after that? It's the tax payer of the country where they have chosen to live. In the UK alone, billions of tax payers money is spent every year and sooner or later, there has to come a point where the UK says no more.
Millionaires as far as I see it have a big responsibility because they have the power to help a lot of people. Many times this doesn't happen due to poor advising because everyone wants to put the hands on their money.
Yup. This guy is "saving the world" by paying for a couple of drones and boats and the crew to go and pick up people in distress. Then the tax payers pay for their healthcare, housing, food, etc. Some of these *ILLEGAL* immigrants get turned away and flown back to their home countries, some are granted asulym and in that case the cost per person saved quickly skyrockets. Key word there being illegal... none of them are entering these countries in a legal manner. In fact, it seems a bit odd that he is allowed to do this. He views it as "saving people's life", I view it as helping people to enter a country illegally.
I like to see millionaires reach out to the less fortunate. That makes me feel like there are still some good people out there.
I share the same thought as you. Reading the report made gave me comfort that at least there are still good hearted people in this world right now. I understand the sentiments of the others though regarding having to pay for the cost of adopting these immigrants with their taxes. The money that goes to taxes are hard earned money.
We certainly are paying for it. I really wish that the country was in the position to offer refuge to those who need it but the simple fact it that whilst this country is in such a shocking state, we can't very well start adding to our numbers.
It's a really positive side that we rarely get to see. I found his quote very touching. I wish more people were be like this.
