Title says it all. Scientology is often mocked internationally and in many parts of the U.S. And, yet, in Hollywood it seems to be rather popular. How did this happen?

You need to watch the Documentary going clear. It explains the beginning of how a cult is made by a sick man. It was created in the hopes of making a lot of money and it sold to the weak minded that was looking for answers. Kind of like how most popular religions are formed now a days. They prey on the weak minded desperately looking for answers.

I always thought that their outrageous "auditing" fees gave the cult a sense of exclusivity. It seems you can only become a Scientologist if you can afford it.

Perhaps it's popularity in Hollywood has a lot to do with schmoozing and butt-kissing? It's a cut throat business anyway and anything that could ingratiate yourself with those more powerful is likely to be exploited. Scientology certainly seems to offer some great networking opportunities.

Why in the world does that building look like a mental institution?...no offense intended when asking, just remembered, in the first episode, season 1 of Constantine, there is a building similar to this one, only in Constantine's case it was a mental institution...I must say, this building spooks me crazy...thanks for the eye-opener in that regard @JoshPosh.

I asked my husband on this one and he said that Scientology is a religion founded by a science fiction writer named Ron L. Hubbard. My husband has some books of Hubbard because he is a sci-fi fan. With regards to being popular in Hollywood, Tom Cruise was the first one to join and the most open with his religion. Probably Cruise's influence, being a popular actor, had made Scientology popular in Hollywood.

I was also going to suggest that I think it became a lot more popular, and people started to look at it as a legitimate form of religion, after it became known that Tom Cruise was a follower. Up until then I think a lot of people hasn't even heard of it, but by him coming out and openly saying he was a follower, that then made people look into it a lot more.

I am not sure, but the only scientoligists I have ever heard of before are celebrities, so I guess you have to have money and influence in order to join this cult. I heard in the radio that Tom Cruise got out of it as a condition to see his young daughter, but I am not sure how true that is.

I have never had someone in general conversation up and tell me they were a scientoligists so it seems like just a Hollywood fad.
