As retaliation for EU and U.S sanctions for its involvement in the Ukraine crisis, Russia banned a number of Western food products last year. Despite experiencing food shortages since then, Putin ordered the destruction of [tons of] Western produced food products. Just because they hate the EU and the U.S they'll let their people starve?

Putin is a savage, an animal. Guys like him throughout the world are the reason we need a president who is tough when it comes to foreign policy, which of course we don't have now.

I don´t think it is a starvation situation.. while they were technically foods that he destroyed, they were mainly luxury items. For instance, one of the foods i heard mentioned were gourmet cheeses.. but there is plenty of other cheese in Russia.

but that aside, if you don´t think Putin will starve his own country, you should read up on the scortched earth policy.. guys like Putin get off on being hardcore like that.. of course he won´t be the one starving..

That is just sick and twisted. Human need always comes before politics and his people should have the right to eat despite where the food came from. It just demonstrates dictatorships at its finest. There is a special kind of hell waiting for him.

It's such a pity for the people because instead of turning into nourishment, those food just went into the dump. But I'm not surprised at the way Putin acted because it's to be expected from a dictator like him. Leaders like him really don't care for the well-being of the people they rule upon and that kind of thing makes me value my freedom, living in a free and open country.

It is a statement. I will give them props for doing that in the name of their belief and convictions. However, it is politically motivated, and I'm sure the poor people wanted to eat those provisions. I think the government officials are eating well. If they did that they should of had a back up plan to make up for the losses. I wonder if they had that in the wings?

There was just an article yesterday again about this. They destroyed $30M worth of imported cheese and arrested the ´smuggling ring´.. Apparently cheese from Switerland is a big thing in Russia, who knew?

These decisions aren't spontaneously made, OP. IT takes studies, calculations, potential outcomes before Putin does something to attract media attention. This is what happened with Crimea annexation as well... European Union was like "blah, blah, sanctions, sanctions...", and how did that affect them really? Sure, they went through a tough situation concerning their currency which decreased by half of its value, but it didn't last for that long.

I think its actions such as this that goes to show that the Russian government isn't concerned about the Russian people but is only in power to further their own political careers and agenda's.

The thing is though, I think a lot of Russian people realise that fact but there's not a great deal they can do about it as the political system isn't exactly all above board over there, and the part with the most amount of votes, doesn't always get into power.
