Speaker John Boehner will be holding a press conference later this Friday afternoon. Conspiracy theorists' saying (1) Republican public policy polls say 72% of those polled want he and Senator Mitchell out of Congressional leadership roles; (2) internal party struggles want him gone for blocking Republican-sought goals; and (3) he wanted to retire two years ago. Take your pick.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is just tired of fighting the fractionated party politics developing in the 2016 election. The young guns and diversity of opinions must be wearing.

    Let the games begin.

Though a Republican, I'm not really a fan of Boehner. I think he's been a poor advocate for conservative principles. While he has stopped a lot of the damage that Obama could have done in the past couple of years, there is much that he's allowed to continue. In addition he hasn't really made it a point to pass good, pro active legislation that would have excited the base. He's also not a very articulate or inspiring leader. Hopefully we can find someone better.

Good riddance. If you look up "RINO" in the dictionary, Boehner (aka Boner) would be pictured. He was, at best, totally ineffective in his position.

This is my thinking as well. Sure Boehner was never much of a challenger for his party but in a way he was actually responsible for keeping things running.
The next person that takes his place will likely be more quarrelsome and faction'ist (Not certain that's a word but you get the gist) meaning another government shutdown (Or two) is more than likely. To which some conservatives may say 'Shutdown be dammed. Not one more taxpayer funded program to pay for California tofu farms is going to pass this legislature.'

That will come at a cost to the party come November 2016 as most people tend to blame the Republicans for the shutdown vs. Democrats.

Good riddance Mr. Boehner! In my opinion he is an arrogant jerk that has never supported his president. I do not like him and glad he is leaving his position. Yet it also makes me wonder if there is any possibility that he may just join the presidential race; it certainly would not shock me. More than likely he could not run in the position he holds; by resigning he is a “free agent” and may very well give us another controversial candidate.

The calls for his resignation were primarily because he didn't go far enough in not supporting the president. If that's a sign of things to come then don't expect his successor to have any less contempt.

Not happening. Again he hasn't been anti-Obama enough to feed the hunger of the far right.
Besides, would you want your next president breaking down in tears across the table from Putin? ... Or for that matter even the head chancellor of the Republic of Congo.

Obama is not Emperor. Anyone living in the United States who would want a king ruling over the population and all other politicians is totally brain dead. Hope that helps.

The reason you have two other branches of govt and positions such as Speaker, majority and minority leaders, etc is for checks and balances - not to "support the president". Hope this helps also.

Kevin McCarthy will more than likely be a continuation of Boehner's tenure. Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather a Republican majority in the House than a Democratic majority. But for once, I'd just like to see Republicans become more aggressive and really set forth some common sense legislation that is going to cap spending, reform entitlements, and rebuild the military while cutting waste. I think you could really rally the nation behind such an agenda. But there doesn't seem to be any appetite to do so in this Congress or with this leadership.

It looks McCarthy has hurt his campaign for Speaker. His public remarks on the Congressional investigation of Benghazi are under fire from fellow Republicans and Pelosi. Further, Pelosi threatens to pull Democrats from participating in the select committee. Can't make this stuff up.
