There is a motion to pass a law in Metro Manila that disallows a person to buy a car when he has no proper parking in his home. This would prompt the real estate builders and developers to re-design their housing villages that would include a parking space of at least 1 car. Many homes in the metro have no garage for their vehicles and they use the road side for their parking. I think that motion is good to be an ordinance so the roads can be cleared of parked vehicles.
Big brother rearing its typically ugly head? Who says a household needs a car? I guess it's easier to pass a silly law rather than improve public transportation and infrastructure within a city. If parking is a problem, put the private sector to work and generate taxable income to Manila. Encourage businesses to fix the problem by building and managing parking garages and lots. And then ban in-street parking as appropriate in congested, problematic areas. It isn't rocket science. Pfft.
Governments tend to always look for the easiest option in my opinion and this seems to be the case again. Instead of improving the parking situation and investing money into improving the road network and then also improving the space for parking, it's much easier to ban people from having a car. They could go one further and ban cars altogether, then they won't have to spend any money at all then on the roads and they could line their own pockets with the extra cash they have saved.
Agreed with Baudwalk here. Seems like parking is a problem, so solve it. Banning parking on the streets, building government / city owned parking garages before that obviously. The private sector would follow as long as there is demand... and in the end a lot of the new houses would have parking spots anyway since people would want one to save on the fees of using a 3rd party garage. Takes a while though, but it's certainly better than just saying "ok this is the law you have to do it now".
@crimsonghost747, the issue of traffic in Metro Manila is getting on the nerves of the people so the government has now deputized cops to man the traffic management. However, the cops said in an interview that they have no power over illegal parking. We couldn't comprehend what that statement means. And then it appeared that the local government had given permission to those vehicles parked on the road. I guess politics is the root cause of that illegal parking.
And there you have it, folks. Stupid politics and failed logic transgress borders around the globe. Incredulous.
Now that's a good motion! I don't think it's fair that cars are sold when there are no parking spots, what sense does that make?
The government of most countries pass laws that most of us can't comprehend so the fact that one more as been passed without a legitimate reason doesn't surprise me unfortunately.
It is only a good rule if existing structures are exempted. Otherwise is is just a way to ban poor people from having cars because they have to rent or buy what is within their means.
Oh wow, I do not think that would ever fly here in the US, we have freedom to purchase whatever we want around here...parking space or not. I do not think that it is in the government's best interest to be dictating what we can and can't purchase. Does the government collect taxes on the car purchases over there in the Phillipines? My guess is that they would lose lots of money if they did.
