Most people often hear of the wars, the inquisitions, the crusades, the bombings and so on but few people know that the good religion has done [and continues to do] eclipses the bad things that have been done in the name of religion. Some positive contributions of religion:

They do a lot of charity work, religion taught people good values, gives people hope because they know a better life awaits them on the other side.

Why do you think atheists and those on the left hand path always call "evil" religion is when it's obvious religion isn't all that bad?

I haven't got the least bit of problems with people who follow a religion or some sort of faith and from my experience I got the perception that it brought people together a lot which is pretty nice I think.

What I have got a problem with is people who use their religion as an excuse if you will to attack others because they do not hold the same believes that they do, and or those who try to push their faith on others.

I also have a problem with people who force their religion down your throat. They can believe what they want, go to church, etc. but they don't have to try to force their beliefs on me. I already have my own. Also, I have been to churches were the people attending are very judgmental toward those who don't go to their particular church or who don't believe what they believe. The part that gets to me is they call themselves Christians but who are they do judge how other people live?

I have a problem with 'organized religion' in the sense that people believe they need to relentlessly recruit, and gather in massive groups to practice. I think that you can have religious faith, and operate in belief just as effectively as a single entity. The good though is major as far as charitable works. You can see a lot of wealthy men doing a lot of good, but most aren't physically out there like some of these missionaries bringing help to the poor and needy. People that use religion, as in the example of Islamic extremists, are a black eye to all who practice various faiths around the globe.

Seventh Day Adventists are the worst. I've been to their churches and all they ever talk about is resting on the Sabbath day which is all good but their assertion that everyone else who doesn't worship on Saturday is "lost," and how they are the remnant church exposes them as liars. No one denomination can claim it is the remnant church because there is apostasy everywhere.

Religion has had a rough time due to fanatics and organizations that call themselves religions like scientology. In the UK where we have catherdrals and Archbishops that hold a high position in society, what they say doe matter. In times of need, like natural disasters, wars, murders, then people regardless of whether they attend regularly will go to church. The church supports and opens the doors to all. That's the positive side and it speaks to the community as a whole and unites and supports it.

Of course they do other things like help feed the homeless and also in the UK many also support schools, which helps with education.

For me, the positive impact of religion is fear to sin. If there is no religion then people will not hesitate to do what they want - rape, steal, any other crimes that they may think of doing. The only thing that restrains people from doing bad things to others is religion which teaches ethics - the science of knowing right from wrong. That positive effect of religion is one thing going for religion. And on top of that, doing good deeds like sharing is also a direct effect of religion.

Religion does have a lot to answer for and I think it's a well known fact that most troubles in the world have religious beliefs at the heart of them.

On a personal level though, while I'm not religious, I know people who are, and the only effect it has on their lives is that they try to live by a certain moral standard and I don't think that's a bad thing, as long as they don't take it to fanatical lengths and try to push their beliefs onto others.

I consider myself as an agnostic, and I don't think that church is "evil" but I think that they are intolerant hypocrites. I live in Mexico and a lot of people are religious and closed minded, and church (or at least here) organize protests against LGBT people and basically see and talk about us as if we were something that it needs to be ended, and that makes me really upset about church.

Cults are evil, brainwashing is evil, murder is evil-- some religions masquerade as cults so that's probably what extreme atheism call the evil religion. I believe that people are good, they're capable of all good and their beliefs are their own. You can't blame a whole religion for the fault of one man. Religion has done a lot to give us faith, hope and love in the grand sense that someone's out there looking out for us. We're not alone God and aliens will make sure of that.
