I think most people who visit any countries that are predominantly Islamic will find themselves in trouble with law because their Sharia laws are quite different. You can't drink. Can't drive if you are a woman, etc, etc. IMHO unless one is visiting such countries because business demands that they meet clients, customers, etc face to face, they shouldn't travel to Muslim majority countries. Just my opinion.
For one thing they have no respect for women so I am not surprised that his happened and that she ended up being punished for it. I had a friend who married a man from there and they were going to move there to live. She stayed for not even a month and she wanted to come back home. She had no say and could go nowhere without her husband. She did once and then she had to answer not only to her husband but to her in-laws as well. They moved back her and now she won't even go to visit!
Dubai is definitely not as bad as these stories make you think. It's a decent place to visit and they are quite welcoming to western visitors. Same for Abu Dhabi. Any of the smaller cities that aren't so big in tourism... those are probably different. But the bigger cities are fine, they are used to tourists and they need tourists there to keep their economy going. I lived in Abu Dhabi for a few months and if you really think they are super strict about these things then you are badly mistaken.
Funny enough, I remember there being a bit of controversy in some sectors of the internet about Instagram models who were being paid exorbitant sums of money to be flown to Dubai and be willing participants in decadent sex parties thrown by rich businessmen (or political leaders/royalty?) in Dubai, among other countries. There was an entire website dedicated to luring IG models into "deals" for large sums of money, and provided screenshots of these conversations that included the models agreeing to all sorts of depraved sexual acts. I swear I'm not making this up, lol. That said...the point is, people DO find reasons to go...
I know quite a few people that work in Dubai, and it's not as bad as a lot of people think. They have different laws, and a lot of them are strict and take a bit of getting used to, but it's certainly not a place to avoid going. As with any country, abide by the laws and enjoy it for what it is, and it's safe. I know people who have worked and lived over there for a number of years without any issues.
And also a lot of other people as its actually becoming a tourist destination for a lot of people, so surely it can't be all that bad?
Places like Dubai are quite popular tourist destinations and I have heard they are not so strict of their laws. If people want to go then that's up to them. Going to these "newish" destinations makes a change from the norm of going to places like Spain and the like.
Well I don't know about regular people, but the filthy rich take their vacations there for not so secret "secret" purposes. That can be researched. A for regular people, I don't know why they'd want to take a trip there. Maybe just to check it off their list of seeing a bunch of places in travel.
