Can someone share a basic overview of the Israeli/Palestine conflict? I think I understand the basics, but I'm not entirely sure and I'd like to be more educated about it since it's so dominant in the news right now. I'd like to read about the topic as well, so if anyone can recommend a book, I'd appreciate that.

This video covers the whole lot in depth but easy to follow.

It's by Miko Peled who was born in Jersusalem into a famous and influential Israeli Zionist family. His father was a famous General in the Israeli Army. He doesn't believe a balanced presentation can be given because it is a totally unbalanced situation.

It's too much to go over as this issue between Israel and Palestine has been going on for decades, really after the Second World War. The current conflict started with the murders of 3 Israeli teens. There were assumptions Hamas was behind the killings and this started the violence between Israeli military and Palestinian citizens. Suddenly out of nowhere Israeli launch into a full on assault on Palestine but I know I am leaving out details in between. Israel is saying they are protecting themselves against Hamas extremists and Hamas is saying that Israel is trying to wipe out all of the Palestinian population. As far as I know there is a cease fire in place right now.

Wasn't it proven that Israel already knew that the teens were dead but still went ahead with the attack using the excuse that they were looking for them?
I don't see how Israel at this point can still claim that they are defending themselves, they're bombing civilian targets, it's just overkill.

Hamas are the radical fanatical extremist terrorists. Used to be that they were the bad guys and we supported Israel. But ever since the "fundamental transformation of America" started 5 years ago, I guess it's a different story these days. Since Obama by all accounts apparently supports muslims, I guess anyone who doesn't follow suit is "racist" or whatever.

    Nothing changed there then:

What I want to know is, why does Israel have the right to defend itself from rockets but Palestine doesn't have the right to defend itself from crippling siege & occupation?

'Terrorists' is just a politically expedient label, one which was applied by the Germans to any resistance.

Hamas are terrorists, by definition. They use suicide bombs and fire rockets at civilian areas, I don't know what else you'd call them. Don't confuse Hamas with Palestine though, it is possible to support one and hate the other. The hero Palestine needs but not the one they deserve you could say.

Hamas are 'terrorists' because the west and Israel call them that. Hamas is an elected political party, voted for by the people in free and fair elections, i.e. democracy.

Hamas sought recognition of Palestine from the U.N council but was vetoed.

    http://world.time.com/2012/11/28/pa...-process-is-dead-long-live-the-peace-process/

Now Hamas is seeking international protection by the United Nations but this again is being blocked by the U.S and 'Foxy News' etc.

Warmongering Foxy News asks "How do you get Hamas to stop fighting"?, The answer is easy, stop stealing their land and brutally oppressing the people in an open prison which is comparable to Warsaw under the Germans.

(For 'studies' in the link, should read 'dismisses')

If you take away all legal/political recourse and impose a totalitarian regime upon the people whereby they lack basic necessities and are continually oppressed, what do you expect in response?

If you were a Palestinian under those conditions, what would you do?

A British MP bravely came out and said 'he would likely fire rockets as well'.

    http://article.wn.com/view/2014/07/23/British_MP_says_he_would_fire_rocket_at_Israelis_from_Gaza/

    Is he a 'terrorist'?

And as for 'terrorist', the IRA was a bona fide terrorist organisation but now their leaders are in government as 'The Good Friday Solution' and peace reigns, (mostly).

The U.S in particular and the West in general are very keen to fund 'terrorists' when it suits them

No one understands determined, but the fact is Israel has a far superior force and they have been accused of genocide while the US gives them millions for an anti-missile system??
