Everywhere you look, you see government trying to push renewable energy but it's costs are still too high. Has the discovery of shale gas pushed renewables to the back of the queue again for now or do they still have a future?

renewable is too big of a concept.
Some forms have a future, others don't.

Just be very careful with renewables that are only profitable due to government incentives, because those could disappear really fast.

Agreed. Do your research and find what renewables are actually renewable at a rate that is actually sustainable. Look into the ones that are being pushed quite hard by the government as well, as then you can get in now while they're pushing it, and if you ever get wind that they're backing out, you sell it as fast as possible, while keeping your investments in the energy that is sustainable.

But yes, overall renewable energy is a good investment, given that no matter what happens, no matter what new oil we find, the time to swap over is coming.

Agreed with this. Renewable energy is not cost effective for the common person to buy into yet. Spending 50k on solar panels for your house simply isn't viable for 98% of people.

Still think we're a few years away from renewable energies from being a viable option.

Exactly. Most of the alternative energy sources are being propped up by massive subsidies by the government. Even then, most can't compete with conventional energy sources.

It is too risky of an investment in my opinion. No precedent has been set for the industry. Regulations are still unclear. I think I will stay away for now.

I agree with everyone else. There may be some big winners in the sector, but overall, it's a highly risky investment. I'd avoid it altogether.
