I live in a block of apartments where the internet is shared by all via WiFi. During the day speeds are OK, but as soon as everybody is home at the end of the day, the speed goes down to snail pace. On the advert our landlord promised broadband internet. How do we get him to keep his end of the bargain?

I read an article about this once... and about all the things that can go wrong with shared wifi (especially if you don't know what kinds of things your neighbors are downloading, etc.) I'd try my best not to have to share with anyone for a whole lot of reasons... one of the main reasons being what you already mentioned.. connection problems at certain times.

But that's not what you asked. :D I guess the only way would be for the people who are going to be using it to keep after him about it and remind him of his promise to get it for everyone. I'd say that as long as something is provided, it doesn't mean that he has to guarantee speeds, just access.

Yes, this is a common problem with shared wifi. Maybe you and your neighbors can persuade the landlord to upgrade the service for higher speeds, or if not then you might need to get your own internet connection as a backup (which is what I do). There are so many different ways to connect these days, and the options are changing all the time, so check into what is working in your area right now and compare prices etc.

The problem with most landlords is failure to keep their part of the deal when you move into an apartment. If everybody agreed to join together to address this issue, then the landlord will have no choice but ensure that the WiFi service is as promised. If none of the other tenants are concerned, then the only alternative is to buy a modem. I would recommend airtel, fast and friendly to the pocket.

You can of course contact the landlord and try to make him get a faster service.
Another option that he would probably prefer doing is to just limit each connections speed to a certain limit within the router. This way one guy downloading something won't slow the internet down that much. The downside is that the maximum speed will be limited for everyone involved, thus increasing download times etc.

The same "amount of internet" that people usually get for one household, you are sharing with all your neighbors, it's bound to be slow as more people start logging on.
The only way around this is for your landlord to upgrade the service so that the internet you are getting is faster.

That is hard to regulate, not only the speed, but the security as well, if the net is shared it's way easier for your neighbors to access your stuff I think.

Wait... you mean using WiFi...people are prone to access my private stuff?!...hackers and all?!...then Virtual Private Network{VPN} would suit me well...i like my privacy being private :)

I don't think its a good idea to share WiFi with a landlord. I mean even if you save money you are still vulnerable to someone accessing your computer right ? Although I think there are ways to prevent that like disabling shared computer network access.

As long as you don't share any of your files etc. then no one inside the wifi network will have access to your computer.
Some firewalls, by default, don't limit connections from inside the same network that much (all in the interest of making networking: sharing files, printers etc. easier) which could make you more vulnerable to attacks from WITHIN the wifi network (as in, another user in your apartment building) but to exploit this they would really have to know what they are doing.

And pretty much any firewall will let you change these settings.
