One year is short that is for sure. The stock market take it's time to value and the companies need to suffer changes through time for the stock value to change as well.

If you're buying and selling under 30 days, it's trading.

If you're doing that between one month and one year, it's short-term investing.

Anything over a year is long-term investing. That's what I've always gone by.

Why do you think that 5 years is the cutoff for the amount of time it takes things to happen?

Depends on what sector. In the biotech field I consider 6 months to be long. Just think it depends on your goals, sector, and how much money you have saved up.

Holding a stock for a year is really no more than a short term investment, god bless the amount of money that you would make from stocks in a year- not enough, For 5 years, I think that would fall squarely into a medium term investment. 6-10 years is may be what I would call long term investment. If a stock value falls between a short to long term period. I would definitely advise a person to not sell, stocks take time. Instead, sell if you see where the market will change in relation to your investment. So if you invest in marijuana, and your State is going to ban marijuana, the natural thing to do is sale, cause the stock price will fall, however, if the dividend payout is real good. I would think twice.

True, one year is not that much time. It's something that takes it's time, I am not that experienced, but I feel that long term is some years and not some months.
