I think you may have misunderstood either what you read or was told. Your mom was a housewife all her life, to your dad, yourself and other siblings. No doubt your dad claimed your mom as a dependent spouse. he paid taxes on his earning on not only his behalf, but also your Mom's behalf. Therefore she is entitled to collect social security benefits should your Father die. That is providing he was of retirement age. (which could be anywhere from 62-67 years old depending on when he was born)

When you claim taxes as a married couple, you get some perks, but not as many as people think. Your dad paid taxes in actuality that covered two people. It irks me a bit when people get on stay at home moms (or dads) there was a time when that was the norm and IMHO America was a better place for it. Stay at home parents do there part, I think young people especially are clueless how much effort goes into running a home successfully. People say they can't save, look at the modern lifestyle, small wonder that savings are on the decline. two earners might be the new norm, but I am for from convinced it is for the better.

I have never heard about it as it is no where in the news. I am not sure whether it is put up anytime in the news also. But if something like this has actually happened, I think it is quite advantageous for the people.

I believe that social security for house wives is a very good idea. But I think it can be really useful and make them feel proud about themselves. I think it is quite a good idea.

This system is in place in the UK too - having said that, the benefits culture here is huge. I think women who have stayed at home to raise the children should be able to claim though. After all, they have helped to raise the future workforce. I think mothers get a raw deal whatever they do. If they stay home, they are criticised for not working but if they d go out to work, they get flack for not being with their families.

I think that it is a fantastic thing to do as well. Being a housewife must be the hardest career on earth. This is one profession where one does not get paid for their hard work. Most housewives are taken for granted and looked down upon. It is about time that they get something in return.

That is true, staying at home sometimes mean an equivalent amount of work of those working outside, so it's fair that they receive some compensation, but at the same time they are not contributing...

I don't know how that works since housewives don't get paid and therefore don't get taxed (they should definitely get paid though; it's a 24/7 job after all; more hours than your normal job) but I'm happy that people who do so much work will get something when they're too old to work. My mother stopped working in order to properly take care of us and she works SO MUCH. Housework never ends, children are always too much to handle, when there's no money for repairs she becomes the repairman, when my dad was assigned to a job three hours away, she became the mom and dad and did all the work for both parents. She's the housewife, the accountant, the repairman, the driver, the teacher, everything. So I'm all for anything that would benefit people who work as hard as her.

I still want to know how that would work though.
