Over the decades, my long term favorite holding has been $VZ with dividend reinvestment. A good dividend payer over the years, and something I've never had to worry about. Not terribly exciting, but not nailbiting, and better than the crummy 0.5% banks are offering on CDs.
I'm currently holding a bit of Cisco (CSCO) and I've got my eye on Sysco (SYY) next time I get the urge to jump back in the water. With Cisco, they're they backbone of the computer world that few people hear about, and Sysco supplies half of American restaurants with food. I don't see either industry taking much of a dump for a while, so I expect good things out of both in the future.
