At last, Nigeria has a new president! Retired General Muhammadu Buhari's historic oath ceremony ends a long military regime in Nigeria and gives way to a new democratic rule. Buhari sits into office amidst the problems Nigeria is facing right now especially the oil crisis. He promises to tackle on corruption issues in the country. Some analysts claimed that the reason there was were lots of terrorist-related issues in Nigeria was because of some unwritten accord which made Muslims and Christians equal, so to say. According to that accord, the presidency was supposed alternate between the two groups. When that accord wasn't honored, there it was . . . lots of bloodshed. I hope that since the president is a Muslim, the extremists will show some respect and back away.

With the ongoing oil crisis, this could be a rocky start for a democratic regime. It might actually do some good to send economic aid (not military!) the help them make the start as peaceful as possible, and give the government time to rally and organize around a new set of goals. Nigeria has a good chance of becoming a strong country if this works, a real political and economical factor.

Absolutely true! With their current oil crisis it could really be a rough start for the new president, more so with the new form of government they have now. I also hope their new government would be able to pull it through soon. They are the biggest African oil producing country so they have a big potential when it comes to their economic state if and only if the new leadership will be able to fix the ongoing problems of their country.

Economical and military aide in the long term usually makes things worse. Foreign meddling in general makes things worse. Let people in developing countries fix their own problems. What happens is westerners are giving western solutions which are designed to fix western problems. These developing nations attempt to use these western solutions and in the long term it ends up making things worse.

There is also the factor that when these western solutions fail, for obvious reasons the people become angry at western nations and it increases terrorism.
