Instead of paying attention to how to tell a person that they need to shut up, I look at the reason for the loud or excessive talking. Sometimes there are reasons why somebody is talking too much and needs to shut up.

Nervous people will talk too much. People who are lonesome will talk too much. Some people just like to hear themselves talk. Talking too much may mean the person feel comfortable in your company.

Anyway, it may be called for at times, to tell someone to Shut Up. I would pull them aside letting them know they are really too loud. Or if they could calm down. Or I would insist that it's my turn to talk to try to turn the conversation around.

Yeah, well once the media spotlight is on them...it is useless. The media will continue to report facts about them. I would love to tell Trump to shut up with his outrageous statements. It is unbelieveable to me that he should be so popular. I think he is a complete and total jerk. Let him run his fading empire and stop dominating our TV screens every night!

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the 1st amendment and other free speech laws in other countries give you the right to say whatever you want about the government? I don't think it really applys when talking to regular people. If it did then you wouldn't be able to get in trouble for hate speech or death threats.

I have to agree. Just telling somebody to shut up is only going to get them angry and/or have them write you off as not being able to argue. So probably the best way to deal is to either have a decent argument, or just not engage in their conversations.

If someone is saying things that would make people want to tell them to "Shut up", then laughing at them is probably the best course of action. Or just kind of snicker at them while looking at them and shaking your head.

The 1st amendment grants you the right to say whatever you want about whomever you want. "God hates fags" is protected speech and it wont get you arrested. "God hates fags and told me to kill them all" is protected speech, but it will get you arrested. As it should. "God hates fags and told me to kill them all.............including Obama" will ensure that you go missing extremely fast with no guarantee of ever being found.

The 1st amendment protects your right to free speech, but it doesn't protect you from the consequences of saying certain words or phrases that are meant to instigate violence and or death.

It's your freedom to tell people to shut up and it's theirs not keep on talking.
