I have never heard of this so this sounds alarming to me. The whole idea of democracy and the right to vote is to give persons freedom of choice. Choice means that you are able to choose the representative who you think will be most effective and represent you well but it also means being able to choose not to vote, especially if you are not satisfied with those running for positions/offices. I am not a U.S. citizen but I feel that persons should have freedom to choose if they want to vote. A better alternative would be to try and recruit more voters by making the voting process more efficient, and definitely better representation, so more persons will be encouraged to vote.

I don't think its a coincidence that most of the folks pushing for mandatory voting are on the left wing of the political spectrum. They generally want less informed people voting as they are easier to fool into voting for bigger government. It is pretty transparent what they are trying to do.

Voting is in everyone's interest and their basic right to do so. Mandatory voting benefits just those who are running--- there are people out there who don't care about the Constitution and that's A-okay. That's the real liberal interest.

I'm with you JR. Your values seem to align with my way of thinking and it is apparent that Obama has no respect for the Constitution or America or its citizens. I have been wondering how he keeps getting away with using executive order to just push his agenda through, with no regard for the political process, and how we are not all working to put a stop to his abuse of the power of the office.

I never heard of mandatory voting, and I think the whole idea is stupid. Do you know how many people would be voting for Donald Duck?? and I don't mean Trump lol.
Who is going to enforce this? Many people don't watch the news and I think those that were forced to vote would be some of these folks...Forget the whole mandatory voting thing....crazy!

I personally don't believe it should be a mandatory thing. Sure, it's your right and you must make use of it, but solely if you want. You mustn't be obliged to vote, especially if those who candidate really don't appeal to you at all.

I would be highly upset if I were ever required to vote because it is my American right to decide if I want to do it or not. If there is not a candidate worth voting for, I am not going to vote for anyone. If voting was mandatory then there had better be a blank check mark on every ballot.

It's definitely an interesting thought, but I don't think it would be the morally right thing to do. If a person is absolutely hating politics and doesn't want to vote for either candidate, I would rather them not vote than just take a crapshoot and just pick a random candidate that doesn't deserve it. On a similar note though, I think that it would be a very good idea if voting were to be a lot easier. I'm talking about automatically being registered to vote when you turn 18, longer election day hours, maybe even a secure way to vote on the internet. If that were to become a thing, I feel like elections would come out more representative of the majority of people instead of the small percentage who are into politics enough to take time to to manage the whole voting process.

Mandatory voting is going on in 20 other countries. In Australia, people who do not vote will get a fine unless due to illness or being not able to vote. My thing with this is many people who don't know about the people that is running will go to the polls and close their eyes and pick whoever. Just because they are forced to have to vote. That would definitely make matters worse if they just so happen to pick someone that is a prejudice person who supports bigotry, and racism.

That was hysterical. You think that people who are more inclined to vote Left are less informed than what the core demographics of the Right are? You think the Republican Bible Belt lacks ignorance, huh? Everyone should want as many Americans to vote as possible. If one happens to be in a Party with outdated messaging or plans, and you don't appeal to the people currently not voting, maybe it is time to step into the 21st century where people other than old White crusty brats get to run things.
