Atheists may be "lost" but in their minds they don't need what they consider to be a fairy story to put their world right. They can live with ambiguity and lack of absolute truth even though they know that their world would probably be improved by the support of religious people. There may be more atheists that inhabit churches then those we currently believe. This is just something that we should know about atheists.
Atheism is just a word, language and linguistic have been thoroughly politicized that you forget what really matters which is what do you believe inside? What faith do you follow? and what does it matter if you're a good person? Having faith is better than having religion anyway.
Religious persons could be lost too, the bottom line is everyone should set some sort of boundries for themselves and hold on tight to thier purpose.
All atheism expresses is a lack of being convinced. Just like one might not believe in voodoo, or that there is currently a woman in a yellow dress murdering people on top of Mount Everest ... it's not that it would be impossible, it's just that absent a good reason or evidence, there is no need to accept it as true. The same goes with God. There isn't even a good reason to think there is only one God over multiple Gods. It's not a matter of choosing to believe, you are either convinced (or convinced yourself), or you aren't convinced. The reason atheism is up is because it is becoming more acceptable to challenge ideas that are bad or unsupportable, as religion gradually loses the conversational free pass it normally enjoys.
What!!?? - Have you never heard of Stalin, Stalin has surely amassed the greatest toll of killings of all time or Mao Zedong Jung Chang releases a biography of Mao that claims that 70 million Chinese died as a result of his policies. Besides the likes of Hitler, Khubilai Khan, Lenin, Pol Pot, genghis Kahn, and many many more atheists.
Hitler was a Chistian as a child who went on to design a custom pagan religion which would have been the Nazi state religion, Pol Pot was Buddhist, and Genghis Khan was Tengrist. Which means they did not follow a monotheistic (one God) religion but they did believe in spiritual powers and/or multiple Gods and did hold to a named religious belief system. I don't think Christians are on average any more or less violent than non-Christians in general or atheists in particular. I do think we should respect people's spiritual paths as exactly what they are and not mis-represent them to make a point.
To say Atheists are lost is a little strong in my opinion, they just believe what they believe, the same as what any religious person believes. If you want to get really philosophical, you could say that every single person on this rock floating through space is lost and trying to make sense out of madness.
Who am I to judge? All I know is that nothing is certain in this universe and there things beyond our understanding. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
