As a response to slowing growth in it's main markets, Apple Inc intends to open some stores in India which happens to be one of the fastest growing smartphone markets.

Whether this will boast the sale of Apple's products in India remains to be seen.

While it does seem like a sensible move for Apple to concentrate on the Indian market, I'm not sure they'll be able to compete with the cheaper brands that are already established over there.

They'll certainly be able to increase their market share, but will that be able to counteract the losses they're making in the western markets? I've yet to be convinced.

we are talking here about smartphones. but, I want to tell you some problems as a trader. Most Stock Market Online trading software, prefers Windows, so you can't use Apple Mac OS. In India 400-500million traders ( possible more than that). Apple smartphones customers, most of them IT engineers.
Cost factor, In India, after 2-3 years, every person buy new smartphone. Higher class, they can buy mobiles like Virtu-T anytime, Middle-Class, most of them don't use many applications in smartphones. they already knew after 2-3 years New technology and competition will increase, so no point in wasting 700-1000$ smartphone. lower class, they also buy smartphones but normally upto 500$ range.
In US, Laptops, smartphones are very cheap. I'm using US made laptop, 476$, but In India, If i bought same laptop, It will cost me 750$ .
solution, I think, is, Apple support Make-In-India program. It will reduce cost factor and useful for marketing. Apple have tough competition with Samsung and Xiaomi. For Indian market, I think, Apple must launch mobiles which fulfill necessities of Indians. Latest US technology, Service and Price tag, I think, these factors are important.

I don't think this makes a real difference. Apple products are already being sold in India, just not in their own stores. I really don't think this will lead to a big increase in market share, it sure might help with customer satisfaction though. (apple people love to go to apple stores and I'm sure the customer service & maintenance there will be better as they only deal in these specific devices)

We cannot say that cheaper brands can be a threat to the well-being of Apple products since the cost of Apple are originally expensive and those cheaper brands are already there since years ago. In other words, Apple is selling its name that means quality when it comes to standard. I myself wonder why people would buy an Apple phone for $500 when a good Android phone can be bought for a fraction of that amount. I guess Apple will click in India.

I'm an Apple user only because I have to because of my work but if I have to choose between Apple and some other cheaper brand, I'd choose the cheaper brand because other brands if well chosen also have the same competitive edge with Apple. I'm having a hard time connecting this device and also sending files to other non-Apple devices. It has to be an Apple device too before I could easily send files. I just don't know how it will fare in India so we'll see how it goes in the next few months.

Maybe this is to stop all the illegal imports and the traders making money off reselling phones? That's how it works in these countries, so by having a presence there it will cut down on these imports through other channels.

I imagine they were making a lot of money, and now Apple can invest and profit from it directly.
