As I write this Mitt Romney is berating the Donald. I'm watching the speech on CSPAN-3. The optics are very wrong. Mentions of Reagan are uttered in front of a Hinckley Institute banner in Salt Lake City. Regardless of the worthiness of the organization, I'd change the name of the organization given that John Hinckley tried to kill Ronald Reagan. I wasn't impressed by Romney's speech. No bombshells, nothing new, just a litany of all/most of the sludge already served up by Trump opponents. Ho hum.

Trump, now in Maine, is having a press conference in a half hour -- 1:15 pm EST -- to be aired on CPAN. CPAC continues on CSPAN-3.

Let the pundit blather of the day carry on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. I, for one, will open a bottle of chilled wine and turn on some good music. Enough already.

I caught a bit of it. Most of it wasn't surprising. Some of the language was out of character for Romney ("phoney", "fraud", "suckers", "into the Abyss", etc.). While he made some good points, and did so eloquently, I'm not entirely sure he was the right messenger, or if it is going to amount to anything at this point.

The only thing that kind of tweaks me a bit is Romney refused to harshly criticize Obama during the 2012 election cycle. It is curious that they give the present POTUS a pass, but Trump causes the fangs to come out.

Gee, is this s word war between Trump and the anti-Trump faction in the GOP? Pardon me to say this but that is being nasty, berating a future president? I am expecting a full support for whoever would win the nomination and it looks like it is not coming. But still, it is Trump in my list when it comes to the probability of winning the nomination so that antics of Mitt Romney is uncalled for. Is he trying to divide the Republican party? As stated in one thread, there was that question if this is the end of the Republican party.

Um, he may or may not be the future Republican nominee, but that is a very long chalk from being the future President. And when it comes to insults, he has no trouble dealing them out right down to suggesting journalists are cranky because they are menstruating and imitating the gestures of a man with a disability. Romney was right about that behavior being disgusting. Hopefully if Trump does end up Pres he will learn to behave with a little more dignity than that. But in the meant time he shouldn't deal it out if he wants to be immune from receiving it.

True, Penny. Some of his antics are downright Kindergarten. And Rubio responding in kind is less than professional. And on a broader scale, while Trump is obviously doing well with a very torqued off GOP base, I don't know how that rhetoric is going to go over in a general election.

The gloves are off now concerning the race between Romney and Trump for the Republican nomination. Romney is launching a spirited counter attack against Donald Trump, but I am wondering if it's too little too late. Trump has been maintaining a momentum which it seems may be difficult to peg back.

What makes you think Romney is campaigning for the nomination?

I was wondering the same thing about that comment.

In fact, in the very speech we're talking about, Romney said he wasn't running for anything. Check around the 24 second mark.

I think the establishment put Romney up to this.

He's certainly entitled to his opinion, but I think he should be bashing Hillary instead of another GOP candidate - particularly on the day it was revealed that Hillary's IT guy who set up and maintained her private server was granted immunity by the DOJ in the criminal investigation, which experts say means there is a grand jury convening.

I think Romney should either formally endorse a candidate or else run again himself, and save the bashing for the dems. It's a shame he couldn't bring it to Obama like this in '12 (other than the first debate) - perhaps he'd be president now.
