http://aa.com.tr/en/turkey/terror-targets-civilians-in-ankara/536677 Today, Sunday evening at 6.45 p.m. local time (1645 GMT), a car bomb in Ankara's central Kizilay neighborhood blew up at a bus stop. AA seems to be more current than the Hurriyet Daily News, but I would expect the newspaper will have more expansive coverage in 8-10 hours. http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/Default.aspx?pageID=238&nID=96403&NewsCatID=509 No early opinions on who the culprits may be. A Twitter posting says the government has shut down access to the popular social media services.
So sad and depressing when there's so much bad news. So much violence and lawlessness. And I hope they find out who the culprits were because they're probably thinking highly of themselves for getting away with it and will do it again.
I would say that "comes" is a little late as the whole country has been in a pretty bad situation security wise for some time now. So I wasn't even remotely surprised to hear about this.
Erdogan is quick to use Turkish forces against the "terrorists" of the PKK, but not so quick to use them against the "terrorists" of ISIS. Seems like what goes around comes around. Still, it's all desperately sad.....
While tragic, it's no surprise that another country has had another incident and Turkey as a country is so divided in any case. Security is lax at the best of times and has only been stepped up since the global community have pressured them due to the borders with Syria.
Why would the government shut social media? I cannot understand their reasons. Are they going to manufacture the information that will be released to the public? That's total injustice. It's everyone's right to know what really happened. If many people's suspicions are correct, it's a shame because that's as much as ISIS can do. They're losing significance. Still, thoughts and prayers for those who died in the incident.
This is such terrible news, I hope the injured can recover from this incident. And may the souls of the casualties rest in peace. I also wish their families the will to accept what have happened and move on from their lives, as terrible as this incident has been. Anyway, it's quite confusing as well to me on why the authorities have to shut down the access to popular media sites. We definitely need more news now more than ever. And social media is the easiest way to make the news travel to distant places. Lastly, I hope the culprit/s would be caught. They have murdered lives and have injured people. Whatever their reason was, it isn't justifiable.
It's getting to the point now when it's becoming another day, another terrorist attack and not such a big deal. That's wrong of course because every time something like this happens, then it SHOULD shock the world and get widespread news coverage. People while saddened by things like this though, are just accepting it as a normal part of life, and that's when the danger really begins.
For some countries (typically in the Middle East and parts of Africa and SE Asia) the shutdown of social media is typically to control communications within anti-government protesters or among terrorist groups within the country.
If this continues, the number of tourists who want to go and visit Turkey (including myself) will surely drop. I don't want to become a human kebab for some stupid religious/political reason.
