Some of you guys are just so knowledgeable about the markets, its like a kind of magic to me. Do you ever act on raw intuition, particuarly when selling stocks ? If you do, is that intuition based on knowledge learned or some other, more indefinable sense. I'd just be interested in hearing what those who have been successful in the markets, have to say about intuition, and how much they trust/depend on it.

I mainly rely upon fundamentals, information obtained from reputable sources, and my own past experiences that give me an idea of how things tend to work and react based upon the endless number of things that happen repeatedly in the markets.

I definitely have moments of intuition, but I don't act on them. Instead I trust my checklist of investment criteria. Yes, I've missed out on some double-digit winners, but I've saved myself from a number of losers too. I can't recommend enough that people develop an investment checklist that ticks off the criteria you need that matches your investment strategy.

I rely on intuition or gut feeling quite a lot in all parts of my life. I was always brought up with the view that if something doesn't feel right, that more often than not it isn't.

That's proved to be the case on more than one occasion so it's a rule I've stuck to.

Wе аll rеly оn intuitiоn tо sоmе еxtеnt. In оur privаtе livеs, wе dоn't quеstiоn it, but in thе invеstmеnt соntеxt, it is оftеn frоwnеd upоn аs sоmеhоw irrаtiоnаl аnd unprоfеssiоnаl. Hаrd fасts аrе whаt invеstmеnt is аll аbоut, right?
In fасt, оnе's innеr vоiсе, whiсh mаkеs itsеlf hеаrd in sо mаny dесisiоn-mаking prосеssеs, is аn еxtrеmеly vаluаblе rеsоurсе. Pаrtiсulаrly in соmplеx invеstmеnt situаtiоns, it is simply impоssiblе tо tаkе аll fасtоrs intо ассоunt thrоugh соnvеntiоnаl mаnаgеriаl аnd аnаlytiсаl prосеssеs. Infоrmаtiоn mаy bе missing оr dаtа mаy bе соntrаdiсtоry, оr еvеn just plаin wrоng. In suсh situаtiоns, intuitiоn аnd а "gut fееl" саn plаy аn indispеnsаblе rоlе.

Is there anyway to save this link so I can read it again? There are some gold resources on this thread and I wouldn't want to forget about them.

I consider stocks to be a form of educated gambling, which is an oxymoron in itself. Everyone has their tricks, their charts, methods to their madness and what have you, but at the end of the day anything can happen. How much of it is really intuition? It's hard to say, I think we all have addictive personalities in a way so we tend to hyper fixate on particular companies or variables which may or may not be warranted.

I've made some huge gains in the past, I've dodged some disasters, and in some cases I've crashed and burned. At the end of the day though, I don't attribute my own success as necessarily being because I'm a savvy investor or the "gut" feeling of intuition, I often just think much of it is luck.

I'm sure intuition plays a part but I try to keep it to a minimum. The fundamentals is where it's at for me, particularly when selling or comparing two investments. When I sell something I will, in most cases, reinvest the money quite fast so it's more about finding another share with a better outlook.

Pardon me for this remark but I don't think intuition is a good indication when considering factors in the stock market. However, I have heard of so many brokers who earned a bonanza with the help of their intuition. I call that a lucky strike. Buy a lucky strike comes rare and there is no assurance or guarantee that you can hit it big. And I believe that the stock market is one big gamble particularly if you don't have the data and reliable information on the stock ownership. Unlike the hype in the internet, joining the bandwagon in the stock market is a silly act.
