I will add that if I was in the restaurant biz, I'd pay my workers as generously as I could. I do believe in paying people well, as I believe you generally get what you pay for. I just don't like big brother forcing an unusually high wage on employers.
Completely agreed. AMEN to that! Haha. $15 is just absurd. Like I said earlier, I completely feel for those who bust their butts off just to make ends meet and God bless them, but be reasonable here people :/ It's the fast food industry.
I think that a livable wage is important in today's economy. I think a livable wage would be good for the economy since it would help a lot of workers spend more of their earnings. There's the issue of figuring out if businesses can handle a higher minimum wage, but I think that a lot of companies can afford to increase their minimum wage and don't. Minimum wage jobs like the fast food industry are said to be for young people who need experience, and not for people trying to raise families, but I think that if the workers are unhappy then they should get a raise.
I think if workers are unhappy, they should generally find a better job. Of course there aren't a huge number of jobs out there these days.
I have heard about this and I have mixed feeling toward this as well. due to the fact you do not need much to qualify get a job at fast food place but the unemployment rate is so high that you have people working in these places that have master degrees
I haven't heard how this turned out... or if it's still ongoing. I'll have to check on that. I think when an unemployment rate is so high that people with top degrees are flipping burgers, it's terrible and I sure hope that soon reverses! On the other hand, if it's those same people wanting $15 an hour because they have a degree, I doubt that I'll ever be willing to pay nine bucks for a little burger that now is on the dollar menu just to pay their wages. Catch 22, I guess, because *someone* would have to pay those ludicrous wages, and it's always (or nearly always) the consumer. Oh, something ironic just hit me... I *did* pay $9 for "a little burger" once. The ironic part? It was on Capitol Hill in D.C.
Fast food jobs are meant for young adults who are just getting their footing in the job market. These jobs are not meant to be living wage jobs...that's what careers are for. You do not even need to go to college these days to get a decent career, you can start out at the bottom like everyone else and work your way up. At some point, you can go to college if you really do need a degree to make even more money.
Exactly, Rosyrain! I know a lot of people may not agree about the not necessarily needing to go to college for a decent career thought... but it's absolutely true. Of the colleagues I know who didn't go to college, the one with the *lowest* income is now sitting on $95k a year with chance for advancement coming real soon. Highest... I'm not sure, but a few years ago it was $230k for him. I don't know if either will decide at some point to get a degree. I'm not sure if it would make any difference at all in the corporate climb since they're so near the top already.
I have mixed feelings to be honest. If they do increase it, it would help alot of people in terms of being able to live better lifes. However, if it starts costing companies alot of money, i think they would look to hiring younger people or using more machines.
No no no. If people want to make a living wage then they need to look elsewhere. This is just ridiculous. I believe in change and standing up for what you believe in but I also believe in being reasonable. Looking into the fast food field for a big paycheck (excluding CEO's etc.) is NOT reasonable.
