You dinosaurs completely miss the point. Facebook and social media allows people from all over the world to interact and observe the lives of others. People see how a person on the other side of the world lives and you realize that we are not very different at all. This certainly makes the world more close and hopefully a more understanding world.

In theory it's a beautiful idea. World peace can be achieved anywhere--even in the interwebs. But can we really stop people who mean to do harm on social media? I think Facebook should start their own online security force if they really want to protect people who share what they care about.

facebook actually discourages discussions about peace, prosperity, and ethical equity (i.e. hold the socially advantaged accountable for the harm they do to the marginalized people they weaponize and brutalize) so to think that marky-poo is peddling this horribly inaccurate message makes my eyes water. it makes me bitter in a way i actually cant describe, and i hate him more just thinking about it.

all social media is used for nefarious deeds, from harassing the disabled to recruiting extremists, and, while it does have it's merits (communication for activists, forming global friendships, entrepreneurial connects etc), social media bears the burden that all major advances in our social technology and engagement have carried: it does more harm than good due to the state of humanity.

facebook is one of my number one examples for when i talk about internet harassment and bullyism that goes on 24/7/365+then some. facebook has many seemingly minor but impactful flaws that damage the ability to seek proper user/victim justice and therefore demotes the notion of peace such as:

an automated (possibly semi-automated) ban system whose flagging methods contradict themselves (calling someone a g*y f*g does not warrant a b&hammer despite hate speech, calling out the person for their action in an aggressive way gets a b&), nearly inaccessible user support, and overall essentially plugging their ears and going "la-la-laaaa" whenever the consumer base complains.

so essentially facebook is guilty of major hypocrisy and is glorifying the massive information glut it's developed due to how infinite the internet is + how infinitely stupid human beings are. at least twitter pretends to do something, which i suppose is validating in a superficial manner.

also suckerberg is fixing to position himself within the commercial VR/singularity tech world which will be a big thing whether you care or not (and not in a good way)

We've been talking to people around the world and understanding how they live since the early days of the web with BBboards and then forums and then social media: Myspace, then Facebook, and now Twitter or Instagram. All Zuckerburg is doing is promoting his product, and strategically not mentioning how much marketing data he captures to sell while doing it.

Even if everyone can get everything they want, what some people will always want is to have more of it than everyone else or, in some cases, to make sure others have less than them or just to control other people who don't want to be controlled. On a local scale that's thumping the neighbour, on a global scale, that's war. No amount of understanding or Facebook will stop it since sometimes you just have to say "no, this is wrong" (slavery, genocide etc.), and the result is conflict.

You can turn anything into a weapon if you want to so yes, in wrong hands facebook can be used for bad purposes. Actually this idea is not that bad when you think about it. He has the point but some people just use facebook senselessly and piss off people like me, making them posting mean things :) Now, we do it for fun but if we somehow new that this actually would help world to become better place we would yearn to behave I believe.

Yeah... everybody using facebook will bring world peace. That would totally work. Osama Bin Laden absolutely loved cowboys. Kim Jong Un loves McDonalds. We are BEST FRIENDS with them! Cheers!

I don't think he's being dead serious here. Otherwise, it's just stupid. Not the best moment to advertise his site once again.

I am of the opinion that Facebook like other media avenues and channels can be a double edged sword. Facebook fosters social interactions between different people in disparate places. One gets to realize that there is a common thread running through humanity. Even members of belligerent nations can start a campaign for a detente in case of hostilities. Equally, Facebook can be used to mobilise people and regions against each other. So its not about Facebook. Its about our collective will and human conscience as well as human consciousness.

I do not see how Facebook is going achieve world peace. I have seen more people complain and pick at each other on that site than I care to discuss. This sounds like nothing but a ploy to get more people to sign up for the site. I have found that Facebook is becoming a waste of time.

There is this Jewish concept called tikkun olam which means, roughly, "to make the world a better place". It is probably Zuckerberg's Jewish background and his desire to improve the world via tikkun olam, rather than merely greed and a desire for more and more money, that is making him want people to use Facebook more and more.....
