Do you think that exorcisms are a real demonic-related thing? Or do you believe that is just results of neurological disorders in that person? I know that it's really relative and it has a lot to do with personal beliefs, but it would be interesting to read some of your opinions.
I believe in the existence of God and angels. In turn I suppose that means I sort of believe in demons and evil spirits too but then again there's a big difference between being possessed and suffering from a mental disorder. Priests and exorcists and trained to spot between the two.
It is not my wont to join this kind of conversation but this time, I just want to contribute. I had seen in the news items like possession and exorcism but I didn't believe until a person I know was part of the "mass possession" which occured some years back. Tne nephew of my close friend was a student in a school that experienced a phenomenon - some 64 students were possessed by the devil all at the same time. It was in the papers and tv. Some priests even said that it is really possible because doctors couldn't find what's wrong.
I have yet to see a demon or concrete proof that demons exist. In fact I find that most "evidence" of demons is from hundreds of years ago. If they were to exist, then shouldn't we have a bit more details about them in the modern times? I mean look at how much technology and research has evolved and yet we have found absolutely nothing relating to these demons in the past years with all this new technology? So no, I don't believe in demons... so that should answer your question.
Exorcisms don't exist. They have always been a belief passed down to assert faith in others and used as a reason for people being evil or appearing possessed. They are souls that aren't good, but saying a few prayers and throwing holy water over them won't release a spirit, because it only leaves when it wants to. It can give the illusion it's gone, but no. It's good to instill faith in others, but is not real IMHO.
The act of an exorcism has been practiced for centuries. In some cases I think that the person being exorcised may just have some sort of neurological disorder. In other cases however there have been pretty eerie accounts of the events leading up to the exorcism. I would lean towards the former though in most cases.
We are, as I like to say, too stupid or too smart for our own good. It really doesn't matter how we will perceive this but it basically the same thing. We are taught from the very beginning of our first thoughts that some things are real and some are not. No body is explaining to you how they know that. It has been said to them and they just transfer the 'knowledge'. When you are born your brain is tabula rasa. Basically we are almost empty and everything we hear is building up our core knowledge about the world. Like when a programmer is writing a programme. We are told that ghosts are not real, and demons and everything in that area. maybe you have seen babies looking around in an empty room. It is not just curiosity. I have witnessed babies smiling at one point to something in front of them ant trying to reach out and grab it. I also seen something similar with my dog. The point is that if I saw a ghost or a demon now and I said to somebody they would pit me in a mental hospital probably.
I think this exorcism is nothing more than schizophrenia in which a person finds himself possessed by the devil and begins to play that role. Again, I am a fan of science and so I cannot believe in what cannot be proven.
