Good for them. I've heard about the prison system in the Netherlands for a long time now, I'm really impressed with the way their government kept up with their security and rehabilitation. Their taxes are really high so really... good for them. I wish more countries can imitate their system.

In surprised that nobody from the left as turned round and said if they have prisons that are stood empty, that means that they can take in even more refugees now then and they can house them in the prisons.

I'm sure that will go down well with the Dutch, finally getting on top of their crime rate, only to be told they have to now fill their prisons with asylum seekers...

The thing is... one of the many reasons they close the prisons is because the prison system requires a certain number of guards per prisoner, number that is higher than in Germany, France and so on. These people neeed money too.

While you're right when you say that not all prison closures are due to the fact the prisons aren't needed anymore due to a lack of crime and offenders, I do think that in the case of the Netherlands the have seen a dramatic de reader in people being sent to prison so on this occasion I do think that's the main reason.

Just because people aren't being sent to prison though, doesn't mean they're not commuting crimes. They could be either not getting caught, or just punished a different way if they are.

It sounds like a perfect country to live in. Crime rate very low, standard of living and wages are very high, so as people because the weed is quite legal. It is even a very beautiful country overall. They have great football league and the national team is great. The red light district, De Wallen is very interesting, at least I heard so :)
