I don't think it's simply because they can hide who they are, like plenty of people here seem to think. I know this can apply to some people, who use it to let out their inner anger. But I work a customer service job, I see it every day on the phone and face-to-face. A lot of people simply love to be rude! I always get people who come in screaming for no reason, who try to degrade us when we've done nothing wrong. Some people are just rotten apples and want to take their troubles out on others. Online, they don't value others because they can disconnect, thinking they're only being rude to a screen name. In person, they think we are beneath them and deserve being treated poorly. The basic problem is people being selfish and not valuing people around them as real humans.

It's all about accountability. If you can get away with being rude, you can do it should you feel like doing it. There is no immediate punishment for acting on impulse. You could have a million impulses and they're in check by the danger they put you in.

Plus, a lot of people are kind of miserable, so they lash out at others. They are not higher minded, critically thinking individuals. They are sad on the inside and so they let their primate emotions get to them.

Anonymity is clearly the main cause, and a perceived lack of consequences for obnoxious behaviour because of that, and I also agree that the younger generation are less considerate of others in their speech patterns. I tend to think though that reading someone elses words on a screen is not the most effective way for people to communicate. I've always written a lot, I write reports everyday at work in which I have to explain sometimes quite complex concepts to people who know nothing about the subject matter initially, so I'd like to think I'm at least a fairly competent communicator through writing, but occasionally I re-read a comment that I, or someone else has made online, and I suddenly realise that the point that the writer was trying to make has been entirely misconstrued, sometimes just because theres a simple comma thats been missed, or added when there shouldn't have been one there. I've lost count of the number of times I've made a complimentary comment to someone online, and they have responded negatively to me, clearly misunderstanding the point I was trying to make.

Because there are often no real consequences, like there would be in the real world. People are more more comfortable speaking their minds, and don't mince their words like they would offline.

I say a lot of things online that would get me arrested if I said them in public, so thank god we have the internet to express ourselves without fear of consequence.

It is just plain old anonymity. People aren't afraid to show there true selves on the internet when they are hiding behind a username. A lot of it is also just 5th graders trolling people.

I think that's because there's no way that they can be caught, at least if they are careful enough to be able to insult someone anonimously. The idea of no one knowing that's actually you is almost empowering, they have the chance to say whatever they want and no one really can say anything to them, that's exactly the opposite thing that happens in real life. I think that's the reason.
