Alot of intellectual gymnastics about the pros and cons of this move can apply but I am at a loss not to describe this as a recipe for a narco state. Am drawing my argument to the experience with alcohol and cigarettes whose legal status has not diminished the ongoing catastrophic effects that they continually engender. Such a move should have a safety net in terms of robust mental and physical health infrastructure that would be able to cope with the initial deluge of cases emanating from this move before the situation gains a semblance of normality.

That's really interesting. Like an experiment. At the end of the day, all those drug users and their addictions... it's their choice. Everyone knows that drugs are dangerous. So, let them live their lives.

I am not so sure that isn't sending the wrong message to those who use. I mean obviously we need more treatment programs. Maybe if drugs were decriminalized and somehow regulated they could build some more treatment centers with the taxes. I don't really see that as being a smart thing to do. It is like saying, it's OK to shoot dangerous drugs into your system..and if you have to steal to support your habit, so be it.

I would very much like to argue that addiction is not a choice! We use the word addict exactly for the opposite, for describing a person in a situation where he cannot quit even if he wants to.
