Bought a nice position in ODP today at a 40% discount from yesterday's price. And added a bit to my small position in Staples on the news that big bro ain't gonna let the merger happen right now.
Where do you see SPLS going JR ? Think I saw today prices sitting in the 8.61 ? in your opinion would that price be a good time to buy in ?
It just got very cheap relative to earnings, book val, and sales. It's been in and around some 14-16 year lows in the last several months, and was doing quite well in the last couple of months before this. Nice dividend, good industry to be in regardless of the economy. I have a few other brick & mortar retailers in my portfolio - WalMart (bought on dip a few months ago), Ross Stores, Sonic, Popeye's, Kroger, Autozone, etc. Have owned Costco in the past, and made some big money in a short period of time a while back playing off the M&A speculation in the Dollar Tree/Family Dollar/DG saga. Another thing I like is when I see guys like Mr Insider Trader Steve Cohen (Point 72 Asset Mgmt) and DE Shaw buying up large blocks of shares of Staples. I should point out that this is one of several hundred stocks I own, and I very rarely have more than 5% of my money in any one company for any length of time. I'm well under 1% currently on each of these. I also like to use put options (and the odd careful short stock position here and there) to bet against some companies and to protect the downside on more volatile long stock positions - particularly things like biotechs, tech, oil & gas EP, alt energy, etc.
I was thinking the same thing, and went bottom fishing (-38%) mid-afternoon for a small position. Unfortunately I didn't drag my feet quite long enough to catch the low just prior to the market close. $ODP closed at $3.63 (-40%). No matter, RSI shows badly oversold, and a sell order for a rebound is already set in place. Re $SPLS, the D-J Newswire reports the company will be making additional operating expense cuts and leaning on suppliers to shave prices. The entire European operation (>200 stores) may be sold. I'd pay attention to the June 14 annual meeting news. The long term price trend is down. If I were to buy here, I think I would happy with a bounce to $10 but then I'm not good about getting these moves right. $SPLS closed down at $8.46, -18%.
