http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/markets/2016/05/06/apple-just-hit-new-low/84024204/ $AAPL touched an intraday 52-week low of $91.85 on Friday, May 6, causing consternation and setting StockTwits and other forums alight. From my perspective, the company needs to get edition 7 of its flagship phone out the door. The sagging global economy , the Chinese copies flooding east Asia and the Indian subcontinent, and the exchange rate is contributing to the malaise.
Nothing to worry about im sure, as soon as 7 hits the market and most likely a new range of tablets everything will head north again.
I'm still holding 100 shares (down from 2100 a couple of years ago), and have a put option here. Icahn recently sold his billions of dollars worth.
Ommph. A new $AAPL intraday 52-week low below $90 -- $89.47 -- occurred today in the 11 am hour. Apple fan peeps on CNBC Squawk Alley were lamenting the lack of new products and news thereof. And the day isn't over.
I still think too many people have seen AAPL as a one-way bet. A decent company / product doesn't always make a decent stock. I'm not saying the story's over but it has certainly changed. Being so heavily dependent on China demand hasn't helped. And it won't be long before we're talking about Alphabet as the largest listed US company.
Onionman, Alphabet took the top spot from Apple today. It was duly noted by the CNBC peeps on Squawk Alley. I think Apple will do OK if edition 7 of the phone is done properly, but we'll see. If nothing else today, I picked up more than expected in shares on the dividend paid/reinvested yesterday.
Pardon this layman's opinion on the stock prices of Apple. My perception is the competition that is getting stiffer and stiffer. Samsung is taking the lead in some parts of Asia, particularly in the Philippines where I reside. Samsung's ****** is making waves particularly with the camera features that is touted to be comparable with movie cameras - an ad said that you can make a movie using their phone. From what I see, those android phones are getting the best of Apple's ******s because of the lower market price.
I think the flagship Samsung S7 series has different microprocessors for Asia and possibly Europe than for North America, and pricing isn't exactly apples to apples. Certainly the exchange rates muddle pricing. I have the Samsung S6, and it is probably the most capable smartphone I've owned. My sales contact tells me that the 2017 models -- no doubt to be shown at the 2017 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona -- are rumored to be a quantum jump over the S7 series. To be sure, game on and Apple will have to up the ante. Apple never participates in the huge international MWC, but I wouldn't be surprised to see their 7 model to be announced or ready for Christmas delivery. Apple just doesn't tip their hand as to what they are up to in product development (except in the broadest terms) or timing until an event is announced. Pundits guess, but I don't pay much attention to the noise. I wouldn't mind another quarter or two to pick up shares at fire sale prices before a bump with new products. An aside. I replaced a 1992 Motorola Bag Phone with probably my favorite phone, and one of the best, the marvelous Motorola StarTac. A few years ago one could still buy them in France. I had that phone from 1996 until 2004 when I bought my first smartphone, a RIM BlackBerry 7200 series.
