Over the years we have seen some massive international mergers involving billions of dollars. While many of these deals make sense from a business point of view they are often investigated and sometimes amended by relevant governments because of competition issues. I think that we need to be wary in matters of national security and similar concerns. Otherwise, I don't think governments should be very involved in this.
Totally agree - there are some areas where politicians should get involved. As you say, on the whole they should butt out and leave the free markets to work as they should.
