The big mail services have their niche and will continue to thrive in much the same way as USPS continued to operate even with the competition of FedEx and UPS. I actually like this move by Amazon as it makes online shopping and fulfillment near instant in the same way that in-store shopping is.

Interesting in theory but I think it's got a long way to go to being practical. I can see small deployments in unpopulated areas maybe taking off but drones are still kind of a new and scary thing for society. I'm not sure I want a bunch of drones buzzing around in the sky delivering stuff but maybe the future has something wackier in store for us later.

Yeah, it's cool, but risky, just imagine if a robber wants to steal a package, they just shoot the drone to get the package no? ;)

That might be a valid concern, in some places the drone might have to travel over a little remote locations and even with GPS tracking there might be some people with bad intentions.
I can just see it now, a guy goes hunting and he comes back home with a pheasant, 2 ducks, an iPad and a laptop!

I don't think many people will be shooting down drones lol, but at the same time I agree that it's a huge investment and I don't know how practical it can be.

Only an idiot would shoot down a drone, so I guess maybe a ton of them would get shot down. :p A lightweight drone that gets knocked out of the air won't cause much harm unless it hits someone, and then the contents of the package are guaranteed to be destroyed. Thieves won't be shooting these drones down, but Amazon will waste tons of money investing in them.

How's it practical? It's super practical but highly unnecessary.

I can see that happening quite a bit, not just in remote areas either. The drones will have gps and cameras I'm sure but what help is that going to be for the guy waiting on his new smart phone to arrive. Local aircraft wouldn't be much of an issue since these drones will be flying so low but i can see the criminal element and rowdy rednecks taking shots at these little flying goldmines.

askanison, I don't think that the plan is really set up to ship long distances from the Warehouse. In a one hour trip at about 1000 feet above the ground, it is really unlikely that anyone would even know that the drone is there, let alone have the aim to hit it.

While many people argue about the practicability of the drone program, I am more interested in the cost-effectiveness of it. Assuming that it can be done, how much would Amazon save? I'm assuming that it will be deployed to rural areas to save gas, but will it really help Amazon save money?

Those are both pertinent questions Harry, but the practicability also depends on the cost-effectiveness, one comes with the other.
