Gold is a very good option for investment as it is good for long term investment as value increases with time.
Historically gold tends to benefit from wars and international friction - however the last few years have been different. As @JR Ewing said its sensible to have some gold exposure as a hedge but a huge switch like this seems overly cautious in the extreme.
