I'm sure Dubai is a paradise if you're rich and a man but I couldn't get past the treatment of the people. I do agree that it's pretty smart they're building something for themselves out of all the oil profits but I think you'll have to see some social changes if they want to keep it up once the oil dries up.

Also to Profit5500, oil rigs are great money if you're a chemical/petro-engineer. Heck, if you're somewhat intelligent and a white man you could make decent money in Dubai. I personally could never do it but I have heard of people teaching English there at least for big profits.

I feel like they might go overboard with the promotion and building of new islands/extremely expensive hotels and such. Dubai is super flashy and all, but I hope they don't "overbuild" and make the place too crowded and not relaxing to visit. That's the only thing that might turn tourists away from it.

I guess that would explain the salary of working at an oil rig. The only thing I would have to really deal with is the long hours at the rig. If I want to be a chemical/petro engineer I just wonder how much training would I need to have to get hired on the rig.

Lots of people in my part of the country make a very good living in the oil / gas industries, even at the lower levels. I understand it's a hard day's work on the lower levels out on the rigs and at the wells though.

Yeah you definitely work for your salary but there's a reason prices are booming out in North Dakota. I think I remember reading that strip clubs have also massively taken off out there too. Not surprising considering you get a bunch of younger men worked to the bone making nearly double the median salary. I know at least in Alberta they do three weeks on and one week off so I wouldn't be shocked to hear it's difficult to do.

Dubai's primary profit comes from tourism. It is also a hub between Europe and Asia.

I think that is not such a bad idea for Dubai to earn money from tourist. I think this will help the Dubai economy because people are visiting their country, which will help the company to keep running in the future. Its not such a bad idea, I mean look at London, too receive lots of tourist and earn a lot of money from them.

I disagree. Perhaps not now, but Dubai is certainly gaining momentum as a travel destination. People want to see and do the best, and now that Dubai boasts, for example, the tallest building in the world, it will, as a destination, begin to get included on people's infamous bucket lists.

I can agree with that. Dubai is definitely a great attraction for many travelers, including Americans. The development rate in the city is astounding, but it's trying to be a world destination and more. Businesses are flocking to Dubai like crazy, too. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the city has become so prominent over the past few years, especially since it boasts the world's tallest building, which does add to its reputation to some degree. There's no denying that.
