This was a heartbreaking story to read today about Major Gen. Harold J. Greene's death in Afghanistan. I don't know why the soldier would open fired out of nowhere. It was sad because I learned this is the first time since Vietnam a US General was killed in an overseas conflict. Some people are saying Greene wasn't specifically targeted but I don't believe that such reasoning. He was the highest ranking member of the NATO Led coalition in Afghanistan. You can read more about it here.
Unusual indeed that a general dies in action, usually they are not in the front, so it's a rare case, like you said, since Vietnam that it hasn't happened.
A big blow for he military indeed, it's very rare that a general actually gets killed. I didn't know that the last time was in Vietnam, but it does show how rare of an occurrence it is.
RIP, General. This is such a tragedy. There should be outrage among our country's brass. Obama gave a public speech later in the day, and he didn't even bother to mention it.
This is just not so good for the US military moral in these troubling times. I feel bad for his family now they have to bury him after these years of active military service. He did not even get the chance to really retire and live the rest of his life in peace.
Soldiers don't "make war" - that's more the politician's job. If you're living in America, you can thank those soldiers for helping keep you safe and warm and free. As much as I think this counrty is headed in the wrong direction, it's still far better than many other places that are downright horrible.
Every soldier knows his or her job and this just shows how vulnerable we can be. The fact that he was a high rank personal who was killed in action is even worse. Soldiers are just the ones sent in to do the dirty work.
