It's not the drugs, in my opinion, but the practioners not having (or perhaps taking) the time to diagnose and evaluate the patient's medical condition. Pressures of an overburdened medical system and government versus insurance firms exaburate the situation. Worse yet, if a person is seeing multiple specialists without having a primary doctor to act as an advocate tracking all medications the outcomes can result in severe problems. I speak from personal experiences. My solution to a near disaster -- I was on 17 meds prescribed by multiple doctors, assured there was no conflicts -- was to move all my medical care to a major nationally and Internationally recognized teaching hospital with a system that everyone I see has immediate and current access to all my medication, tests, procedures and hospitalization records. I also make extensive use of Medscape, available on the web and as an app for the tablet/smartphone, to formulate questions.

That is actually a surprisingly effective ad for the legalization of marijuana...

    ...just saying.

This has been going on for decades since people seem to be obsessed with taking medication. People do get addicted and sometimes they don't even need the strong medication, but they think it will work faster. The body doesn't work that way and needs to heal slowly.

While doctors can be said to over prescribing, people need to take responsibility too, by asking what the side effects are and if they change doctors to disclose information that can help them get the right treatment. Many people hold information back, because they want the meds.

In my case it was an auto accident that I'm still paying for decades later for the rest of my life. I did ask, repeatedly and often, to no avail. I wasn't holding back info. I just got smarter and sought help elsewhere.

Pharmaceutical companies make millions selling addictive drugs. Early in August there was some news circulating on the net that the pharmaceutical companies were thinking of making less addictive opioid drugs. Less addictive won't make a huge difference IMHO because the drugs still would be ADDICTIVE. Will the problem be ever solved? I doubt it.

Pain relievers ? Really? Wow, that is a big problem. I understand it is a web of companies working together to gain more money on miserable people and those in need. It is the way it is working forever i think. But, this statistics blew me away. I didn't realize it was such a big issue there. Pharmaceutical companies are selling these drugs with purpose. That is an open secret and it is not going to stop. I hope people will be able to see through these schemes but i know what addiction is and it is not an easy trip to make. I found funny that marijuana was in that diagram. 0 overdoses, of course, it is not addictive or harmful.

The governments all around the world work with this agenda so it's not going to change. They're the ones supplying the things these people need to get drugs out on the streets to people.
