Saffron is a homegrown treasure mainly produced by Iran. It is the most expensive and highly in -demand spice in the world which is more popularly known as "red gold" because of its red colored strands. The highest quality crop of Saffron costs $65 per gram, which may be higher than the price of Gold. Traders have been finding it hard to export the expensive spice to areas such as the US, Canada and Europe though. This is because of the international sanctions imposed against Iran. But once the sanctions have been lifted, a bigger demand is expected of the precious crop. Here's a link to the story: http://edition.cnn.com/2015/06/03/middleeast/iran-saffron-red-gold/index.html
What I don't get is what people like about Saffron. It has a terrible taste but is surprisingly very expensive. Maybe people think it's great because it's somewhat pricey? When the sanctions are lifted I suppose it's only the Iranians who'll benefit from the sales, right?
Most definitely yes. The price of a gram is even higher than gold so imagine how much revenue Iran would gain once the sanctions are lifted. They'd be saving a lot from having to export through a third party. I also don't understand the fondness of some people with saffron though. I guess the expensive price also adds to the fondness.
