First it was North Korea and 'The Interview" now it is Egypt and "Exodus" seriously what is up with all this banning of movies? i can get why they might ban certain musical acts (some probably served to be) but now all of a sudden it is specific movies? So there are government people in these countries that just pick and choose what they don't like without really any reason? I don't get it. I know some countries censure, and that is there prerogative but selective censoring? whats the point? if they hate American Hollywood just censure all of it
They need a good solid dose of: Lighten Up Francis. The material spewed out of Hollyweird is so disposable, frankly, who cares.
Cultures are really different and allow or not certain topics. I recall that years ago shows from Madonna were forbidden in some countries, so it really depends on where we are.
"Exodus" has been labeled a "Zionist" film so I'm certain that it's not just Egypt that will ban the film [at home]. But I see no point in these bans. People watch a movie once and forget about it. In any case why now? There have been numerous Exodus films [though the titles are different] and there never were any bans. Looks like these days it's easy to be influenced by the actions of others.
There is freedom of speech so anyone can do and produce what they want at least in most countries, this doesn't mean that we should be disrespectful and sadly this happens a lot.
Some people are irrational fanatics. And unfortunately some of these people have money, power, and other resources that enable them to harm or oppress others. Perhaps most unfortunately some other people will cower to those fanatics at the drop of a hat or even live their lives and pressure others to live their lives in ways that won't "offend" such fanatics either out of fear or even just out of misguided "tolerance".
I can recall The Wolf of Wall street being banned up in our country but i still got to see it either way, these bans do happen but one way or another, they find their way in peoples living rooms...perhaps the barriers withholding them {banned movies} from reaching the masses are highly porous...just saying
I really want to see The Interview, but I am going to wait until it comes out on DVD. What is so wrong with this movie anyhow?
Rosy you can find The Interview easily online both paid and for free. It keeps coming up on YouTube when I am searching for other things so a LOT of people must have put it on there. This is not the first time Egypt has banned a movie for religious reasons. What does it mean for a movie to be "Zionist" anyway?
Really Wolf of Wall Street? That wasn't even a very good movie- what country are you in Diane? I can understand a country not wanting to become to Americanized. In fact when I was in college I had a class that went in depth into what Americanization did in Mexico thru the Maquiladora's and how it lead to the ultimate demise of the way of life. It can be argued that the American way of life did not do that great for American's either I guess. I just have always felt that if things are banned or censured, and it does not really matter what it is - you are removing a stimuli that could help spark a great idea in someone. Talk radio often brings up the topic of dumbing down society. Yes Hollywood can be as dumb as it gets, but still you never can be certain what will cause an inspirational (or irrational) flash in someone's mind. I could go on quite a rant on this topic so I am reeling myself in. In short should it be society or family that decides what is appropriate entertainment wise?
