I just started playing a bit of onine poker again recently. I find that poker shares a lot of similarities with trading/investing. For example, bank roll management is like risk management. Understanding the behaviour of the table (aggressive, conservative, loose, tight) is similar to understand behaviour economics (market fear, greed (I'd rather we have this right now), etc). When to cut your loses or having the patience to wait for the right time is market timing(though much easier in poker). And finally poker tilt is the same as trading.

Yeah. It is definitely similar to stocks. I do enjoy playing with friends. I never really liked playing online. I would rather get together with a group to play.

I also see a lot of resemblances between poker and stocks, it's all a matter of reading the game properly, know when to bet and know when to fold, someone ought to write a book about this! :D

I play a bit of poker online and I'm not sure I see the same similarities you do.
I think the biggest difference is that when investing, there is the possibility for you and your friends to all win money and have a good time, while in Poker only one of you is coming ouot the winner, everyone else is a loser in that case.

I like to play poker, but I'm not very good at it. If I play for money, it's generally only chump change. I'm way too scared to sink too much into it -- I'm not very confident in my skills at all lol.

I agree with you on that note, in fact I was debating with this guy just yesterday that said he rather play poker to make money online rather than invest in the stock market and I was saying the exact same thing that the stocks are generally creates value over long periods while online poker is negative sum. But then again, it's still similar to trading, just more so to something like stock options, where it's also a negative sum game after factoring transaction fee.

I will play for free online a little bit once in a while - blackjack or some of the other games I can play by myself. Casinos are big in my city, but I'm not really a gambler. Many people here and who come here for the casinos are degenerate gamblers though.

I used to play a whoping $10-20 about one night a week at the $.25 poker machines my favorite nearby casino has at the bar. And the only reason I did that was to get a view of the cocktail waitresses coming to the side of the bar & try to chat them up. :D

They recently put in a bar behind a wall that the waitresses now go to to get drinks for the customers on the floor, so I no longer feel the need to play video poker at the bar. :(

I still go to the casino about once a week, but I don't gamble. I do spend $ on food, drink, and occasionally a suite, however. They get your $ one way or another.

Oh yeah, I'm the same way, I only do it to have fun, I'd never do it as a money-making mechanism.

Every now and then when I'm with friends. Never for money though, I don't want to lose the last of my cash on a poker game.
