While so-called “celebrity” tipsters are two a penny at the moment there is an ongoing debate as to whether celebrity tipsters really can move stocks. We see the headlines, we see their comments but what are their performance figures in the longer term. It is also interesting to note that very often we only hear about their success stories and many of their failures are “buried at night”. So, can celebrity tipsters really move stocks?

"Celebrity" tipsters often move stocks in the direction opposite of what they are recommending. :D

Now if you're talking about one of the greats - Buffett, Icahn, Steve Cohen, Soros, et al - they will certainly move stocks in their direction when they file their positions in those stocks with the SEC...

Icahn's occasional tweets aside, notice that they usually don't talk about what they are doing or thinking about doing. If they do mention this or that stock that they own, it's usually well after they have disclosed the holding in the required monthly / quarterly SEC filings.

Do some tipsters take positions and then let investors and the market know what they have done afterwards? Can these situations sometimes turn into self-fulfilling prophecies?
