News that the Brazilian economy fell by 3.6% in 2016 and is 8% smaller than it was at the end of 2014 is a body blow for the South American economy. The decline of 0.9% in gross domestic product in the final three months of 2016 brings to 8 the number of consecutive quarterly declines in the economy.
