Last year Monsanto attempted to buy Syngenta offering up to $47 billion but Syngenta wasn't all that interested. Maybe they didn't want to sell the company to Monsanto for some reason. Less than 6 months later, State-owned Chem-China offers them $43 billion and they are fine with it. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-syngenta-ag-m-a-chemchina-idUSKCN0VB1D9 Since Syngenta's board will still have to consider rival offers I wonder if Monsanto will make another attempt to buy the company.
Just because an offer is accepted, doesn't necessarily mean it will go ahead though. If Syngenta is for sale, then I'd imagine there would be quite a few interested parties but for those sums of money quoted, I'm not sure just how many would be able to afford to pay.
