Alright, what are your opinions on the teaching of creationism in Public Schools? Is it science? Or is it alternatively packaged religious dogma?
Creationism is not a science this it has no business being included in science curriculum. I don't think it is necessarily important to include creationism in the curriculum of our public schools but given the relevance of christianity in our nation it is important to touch on christianity and other religions in public education.
I think it's important to cover all bases. Creationism should be taught in schools as long as alternative theories like evolutionism and the views of other religions are also considered. It's hardly science though and would, I imagine, fall under the "religios education" category.
If you are talking about the religious doctrine of Creationism, particularly the Young Earth flavor, no, it doesn't belong in a Science class. People have the right to believe what the like, but that kind of stuff simply isn't science. Intelligent Design, the philosophical notion that an intelligence of some kind created the universe, could have a place in a Philosophy class though.
Creationism isn't science. It should be excluded from the curriculum though. No one knows exactly how the universe came to be. All we have are theories and until there's proof that one theory is ENTIRELY true [not based on suppositions] then all theories should be considered to be equally valid and kids for that reason must hear them all and decide for themselves which of the theories they'll believe. By the way there are creationists who believe the earth is older than 10,000 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Earth_creationism Old Earth creationism is typically more compatible with mainstream scientific thought on the issues of physics, chemistry, geology and the age of the Earth, in comparison to young Earth creationism.
YES IT SHOULD BE IN THE SCHOOLS! It is very important we teach our kids about things like the bible and creationism. These myths and fairy tales are an important part of the human narrative. English and Literature classes should contain a variety of works, can't all be just Shakespeare.
I agree that creationism is not a science, and therefore should not be included in science class in school, but would be better suited for philosophy class. It is good for students to learn about it so that they may question it and form their own opinions on the matter. Critical thinking is an important tool that kids learn in school and helps them to form their own ideas and beliefs.
Where I live, it is mandatory that everyone needs to be taught Creationism knowledge, and that completely sucks since I get tired of always hearing that teacher completely and obliviously saying that rehashed bullcrap 1 hour per week, when himself doesn't believe in anything that he says. So yeah... waaheehee, right? I don't feel contented whatsoever. P.S. Keep in mind that I'm currently studying Android and iOS programming at an UNIVERSITY, so teaching me Creationism is truly nonsensical.
Like many have said, creationism is not science and it's just a fairytale. I think it should be part of religious education (however that is done in the schools... but people need to know a thing or two about the major religions) but obviously it should be taught as that, a religious "theory" and not as a fact.
Everyone here is talking about creationism in school. But are you guys referring to one religion or all of them? Sound like you guys are referring the Christianity. I have new for you guys, the whole world doesn't run on Christian faith. Majority of the people in the world that do follow a belief system are Islamic. How would you guys feel if Islam creationism was mandatory in your schools? Would you feel like it is just now? Or does it just pertain to Christianity in schools?
