Baudwalk, GILD is an exceptional company - great drugs, financially stable, great profits, margins, relatively cheap, etc. Most biotechs are far more speculative, volatile, and not exactly financially stable. GILD is an exception. It is also far larger than most of these others - that I tend to just invest a few hundred or perhaps a few thousand in here and there. For the typical conservative small investor, it's a much better choice than just about any other biotech IMO as a small part of a balanced portfolio.
Ciao, That's 20 shares at $5.80, 40 shares @ $2.50, etc... I tend to buy these smaller, more volatile, less stable, high-beta, high risk stocks very lightly... $100-200 here, perhaps $1-2k there, etc. Realizing $100-200 here in gains, $1-2k or more there in gains pretty frequently adds up... Bigger and more stable companies that usually earn lots of money, have strong margins and cash flows, etc are usually bought more heavily. I may buy a few thousand dollars worth of some companies like URI, EOG, FANG, and CLR each time I buy them... perhaps tens of thousands worth of a few others like WMT and APPL here and there... and I may have low six figures worth of a company like Google and perhaps a small number of others here and there. I like to buy on dips, and frequently use this as a way to gradually add to positions over time. I'm big on diversification and risk management, and tend to keep a nice pile of available cash in my trading portfolios. I will typically have dozens of medium to large positions, and hundreds of smaller positions in my portfolios on any given day. I tend to hold the larger, more stable positions longer.
