Awesome! Please, start growing your own food! There are a lot of resources out there to help you no matter where you live. There is a guy up in Milwaukee sustaining 20 people in a vacant lot! We have 8 raised beds and produce enough food to feed us during the summer.

I think that growing our own food is great, but a lot of work as well. First, if we are living in a city we need to find the place to do it (most of us live in flats). If we do find the place we need to dedicate it daily time..., it's not for everyone.

It's not that hard. Invest in some pots and window sill boxes. Sure you won't be making all your own food, but it's a nice supplementary source of food.

Are you doing that Livvy? I agree that it's not so hard... maybe. :) Possibly it looks harder to the external person that has no clue on how to do it and imagines that it's something really complex and time consuming. :)

I think that anything is better than just going to the supermarket and buy and those processed and GMO, those for sure are not making us healthier. There are already quite a few shops directly from the producer in some cities.

Basically that's what I'm saying Kate. Far too many people are fine complaining and saying that others should fix things, but aren't willing to put in the time and effort to help themselves. You see it with entertainment too. Your child gets to watching porn on a computer with the internet? That's not your fault its the fault of the computer people!

This is very true... and it's not just school lunches, either... look at how much more we have to pay for something like ground beef that's 96% fat free vs. the horrible fat-laden cheap kind. (I know some would argue that even the 96% isn't healthy, but it's the first thing I thought of to compare.) :D

And organic veggies... *so* much more expensive than the unhealthy sprayed with who-knows-what version? I think we should pay LESS for organic because... well, pull it out of the ground, sell it! Okay, maybe it's not that simple, but it is at the farmers markets where I get some of my veggies!

Oh, yes... so right. It doesn't seem to ever be "how do I fix this?!" any longer... it's more like "who's going to fix this?" The whole mindset has changed and finding a scapegoat is suddenly more important than making whatever it is better for our kids or our family.

Yep, I agree with that, we can't expect other people to solve our problems, it's very easy to complain and expect things to change while we are sitting in our couch eating genetically modified popcorn...

I would love to help out anyone who finds themselves interested in learning how they can start creating a self-sufficient food source - even if you live in an apartment or condo.

For those of you in urban setting, take a look here at Will Allen, http://www.growingpower.org/
