There's a good YouTube vid by a guy called That Guy T who argues pretty strongly that college education should NOT be free. He's staunchly Libertarian, and his view is basically that if you give everyone access to a college degree then it becomes as ubiquitous as a high school diploma, and thus loses its value. I think that's a pretty strong argument. And in this day and age, excepting certain fields of study (such as STEM and, say Law and Medicine), there is so much information available on the web that you can teach yourself pretty much anything and make a go of it these days.
