They will if there is something in it for them. As I said unemployment in Europe is high partly due to the fact that unemployment benefits allow people to live a completely good life... for years in some countries. Once again not talking about having a small apartment and some food on the table: I'm talking about eating out in town once in a while, buying new clothes regularly, getting that new playstation etc.

The maximum unemployment benefits you can get should be lower than the minimum wage in a full time job. And you should be able to accept a part time job and still get part of the unemployment benefits so that you PROFIT from working. As long as work leads to a better lifestyle, then I think people will automatically start looking for jobs instead of taking it easy.

Social security was just another example on how planning society fails often. The demographics didn't help that is a fact, but the funds were volatile too for the most various reasons, so sadly private retirement plans seem to be the future.

Wow - that's quite a stance. Yes, clearly things need to change as the current model is sustainable. But to shift it to a Darwinian survival of the fitness environment is just too scary. But I'm from Europe and I come from a different perspective (you'll probably assume that we're all Socialists as well). There will always be people that need help. It's just when the system is abused or isn't aligned properly that there is a problem.

Personally, ending all forms of help will plunge a lot more people into poverty. While it might save the government money in the short term, the long term repercussions could be endless.

This will only lead to people being able to get an education if they are lucky enough to be able to afford it. What if you can't? What's the alternative?

In Australia there is a slightly higher tax rate, however there is healthcare for everyone, education for everyone, and retirement for everyone. It is absurd to think how selfish someone could be to care only for themselves and not want to help those in need. That is very sad. In Australia, the additional fraction of a percent of tax for healthcare, education and retirement is truly not a hardship on anyone.

Nobody has to pay outrageous prices to insure themselves and their families, nobody has to pay outrageous costs to get a decent education and nobody has to retire and resort to sleeping underneath a bridge because they cannot afford a place to live when they are too old and sick to work.

I just don't understand why so many Americans freak out at the word "socialized" as if it is some form of corrupt communism. The two are very different. Many capitalist countries have very successful socialized programs.

Your kidding me right? Your post has got to be clickbait because that is the most outrageous nonsense I have read today other than ANOTHER Bush is running for president as well as ANOTHER Clinton.

You know, I'm all for constitutional rights and such but this nonsense needs to be curtailed. We know just how propaganda works and how it affects people's decision making processes and dangerous speech such as this has the ability to change the course of the nation in ways that will send it into third world status.

You sir have won the Idiot of the Day award hands down.

A nation is not based on how it treats it rich but rather how it treats its poor and needy. Go try living in one of those nations for a while and see how you like it. After you get hit over the head a few times, robbed, beaten, you ID stolen, your accounts hacked, and your broke and in need of assistance.....come back and keep spouting this nonsense.

A social safety net and public education are hallmarks of a modern society. To say do away with them to save a couple bucks is pretty short-sighted.
Granted there should be a discussion on how to effectively modernized these systems, what changes we can make to make them more effective.
