North Korea has reportedly fired six short-ranged missiles into the sea hours after the UN Security Council voted unanimously for what would be the strongest sanctions ever imposed on North Korea so far. The imposing of the new sanctions is related to the North's latest nuclear tests and satellite launch which have violated the already existing sanctions imposed on them. The missiles were fired as an act of rebellion against the new sanctions.

Yeah, they basically do this every time the UN takes a vote against them, it is tradition and nothing worth noting.

For all that people say Obama is weak, nobody is giving him credit for getting China to blink. China not only voted for these sanctions, but reports have it that they are the ones who recommended the ones that will be most harmful to North Korea ( Coal and Steel). Why did China suddenly do an about face after 30 years of protecting NK in the UN security council? Because Obama threatened to put a missile shield and the radar to support it in South Korea and Japan.

With the wanton firing of that missile, North Korea had earned the ire of the allied countries that resulted in a sanction by the UN. As an effect of that, one of their cargo vessel is being held in the Subic Bay port and the Philippines has no intention of releasing it for now and even planning to deport all the crew including the captain. This sanction is in consonance with the security measures that such ships may be carrying nuclear cargo. It is a big problem for North Korea now because their economy is being affected by the sanction.

We hear of sanctions against North Korea on many occasions, however, these sanctions don't seem to deter the Korean Government from continuing on its controversial path. North Korea has the backing of two superpowers, China and Russia. Therefore, this support of North Korea by these two powerful nations seems to be the factor that is enabling North Korea to be able to defy the sanctions that have been set against them.

It's weird how Kim Jong Un can afford to fire missiles just to intimidate enemies of his own choosing when a great chunk of North Koreans have nothing to eat and do not have decent education. Will he make a business out of these missiles or was he just firing them to annoy his detractors? His actions do not seem to generate enough income for his country. Sooner or later it will all backfire.

They always seem to do this whenever a decision is made which is not in their favor. I agree with xTinx that the priorities may be out of alignment here.

When there are people starving and without enough to eat, or there is a country that is impoverished and could use resources and help with cooperation of others...it is not a move of wisdom to fire rockets into space and use up resources that could grow the nation (the profit, and the wellness) of everyone in it.

I understand that Kim Jong Un is trying to live up to the legends and what is expected of his role, but in 2016 it would seem that they may need a different approach because it's only going to hurt the people and the regime that Kim Jong wants to be stronger. It doesn't help the country, or anything else when he does that. It may seem like strength and standing up to other countries, but it's just not. It takes away from where it could be spent elsewhere.

So North Korea gets restrictions and sanctions imposed on it, it fires a few rockets into the sea in anger, then everything goes back to normal? Sounds about right.

My main worry is regarding these sanctions, because every time, we hear that they're the most we've ever imposed, but North Korea don't exactly seem to be struggling. Are they making any difference to them, or are we just like him? All words but not a lot of action...

This behaviour is expected from the President of North Korea because he is prone to making threats and throwing tantrums, whenever there is some decision that is not favourable to his ideals, so, in this instance, he is simply playing to form.
